People have been fishing in Sicily for bluefin tuna since the prehistoric times. Bluefins have always inhabited Sicilian waters including the small islands in the mid of the Mediterranean sea. Neolithic rock painting inside caves, a Greek vase, all the “Tonnara” of Sicily, and other art pieces found in Sicily are the witness that tuna fishing here is timeless.

The bluefin tuna is what makes sportfishing in Sicily an experience unique in the world. This species is a mighty one - weighing somewhere between 50 to 100 kg and capable of swimming at 64km/hour. Large schools are plentiful in the Mediterranean Sea all year around especially in the Egadi Islands and western Sicily. Drifting and live bait trolling are the most common techniques to catch them. In Eastern Sicily, bluefins often go on a feeding frenzy preying on baitfish near the water's surface. When this nature show happens, its possible to practice popping, spinning, or fly fishing.

3-Day Bluefin Tuna Fishing Itinerary

Day 1:
When you arrive in Sicily, our guide will pick you up at any of the 4 airports to take you on a 20-minute boat trip to the lodge located on the island. Along the way, you'll also have the option of spending one night in Catania to see Etna Volcano. Once you arrive at the lodge, our guide will introduce you to fishing techniques and strategies and then take you on your first fishing session to catch tunas with live bait and dead bait drifting.

Other activities on the first day include bike excursion to a Limestone quarry and cave forming a solarium where you can stop for a while and swim. You can also relax and snorkel at an amazing beach in Cala Azzurra and then have a typical Sicilian lunch at a restaurant.

Day 2: 
After an early breakfast, our guide will take you on the second fishing session and then introduce you to barehanded octopus fishing in the afternoon.

You can also trek to the top of the island and visit an old prison after the fishing trip. Our guide will bring you to the Old Tonnara of Favignana where you can learn the history of tuna fishing. After a hearty Sicilian lunch, you get to see caves of made of calcarenite stone and then make a stop at a hidden cove to rest or swim. Pizza and barbecue will be served to you at the beach for your dinner after the day's activities are concluded.

Day 3:
You have the option to go on a third fishing session where you can hop on a boat to fish for dentex, amberjacks, groupers, or bluefin tuna.

And before you head back to the airport, our guide will take you to the other side of the island where you can see the Levanzo island, visit the prehistoric caves and an ancient village, or look for a rare monk seal while trekking to the northern side island.

Another fun alternative is spending your third day visiting another beautiful island where you can explore amazing caves and even snorkel in the dark but crystal clear waters. If there's still time, you also have the option to spend one night in Catania to see the famous Mount Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano.

And before we head back to the airport, you can go on a panoramic walk to visit an ancient Roman village in a land of mufflons and wild goats.
